Recently, my wife and I celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary. Looking at our work schedules, we decided last minute that we wanted to spend the night away. We wanted to stay in Portsmouth, preferably by the water. There were many options, but there were no Chase transfer partners worth using (I’m looking at you Marriott!). We kept looking and finally we decided on the Sheraton. This was the first time we stayed at an SPG property, but it probably won’t be our last! I have nothing against SPG properties, actually I think they are extremely nice, but I will be the first to tell you that I don’t care for SPG points. I don’t carry their credit card and have no interest in holding it. The points are slow to accumulate and I think the program is more on the overrated side. I think I’m in the minority here, but I know I’m not alone in my thoughts on SPG points. Deciding to stay at the Sheraton didn’t mean we were willing to spend a lot of money for a hotel. So I had to see how we could stay there with our points that we already had.
Customer Service: The service at the Sheraton was phenomenal. From the minute we checked in, it was a great atmosphere and they really made us feel welcome. The front desk even gave us a great recommendation for dinner.
When I was checking in, I was told there was a note on my account. We were given an extra amenity, which was champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for our anniversary. I thought that was pretty awesome of them to do. It didn’t stop there…
Right after he told me that, I was then informed that we had been upgraded to the Club Level floor with a Harbor View. We had access to the Club Level Lounge, which serve hot d’oeuvres from 6 to 8 pm and breakfast from 6 to 9 am.
Price: We decided that we were going to stay in a Club floor room with a King bed. This was on the first floor of the hotel and the actual cost of the room on the Sheraton site was $205.03. When looking at the Sheraton online, using SPG points it would cost 10,000 SPG points, that means you would need to spend $10,000 to earn 1 free night here! Well since I have 0 SPG points, that was an issue. One thing I have plenty of is Ultimate Reward points. When I redeem them for travel through Chase, I receive 1.25 cents per point. When looking that the hotels available on Chase’s travel site, the Sheraton was on the list! It was going to cost 14,641 Ultimate Reward points. That is much better than 10,000 SPG points anyway of the week!
After we were upgraded, me being me, I had to know how much value my points had gotten me. The cost of the room we were upgraded to would have cost us $315, had we had to pay for the room. I redeemed 14,641 Ultimate Reward points and now was redeeming them at 2.1 cents per point. That’s a great value for my Ultimate Reward points!
Our Room: I thought our room was very nice. It was about 500 square feet and we even received free wifi and free parking from our original booking. We had a nice large comfortable King bed. There were 2 robes in the closet for us to use and a nice comfortable leather chair to sit in as well. There were many amenities in the bathroom and complimentary bottles of water in the room as well. I felt a little spoiled in this room.
The view of the Harbor was beautiful and I was shocked and very happy we were given an upgraded room.
Location: The hotel I thought in a great spot. The view looking at the harbor was awesome. We were only about a 5 minute walk to where all the shops and restaurants were at. It was very convenient entering and leaving the hotel area. There was very little traffic and walking where we needed to go was very easy. If we needed to drive we could have. Also, Uber is in the area, so we could have called an Uber if we really didn’t want to drive or walk.
You could see other hotels in the area, but from what I could see, the Sheraton was the only one with a harbor view. We were told that the lobby area was remodeled recently and the lobby of the hotel did not disappoint.
Overall: This was an amazing hotel and the hotel staff was awesome. They really seemed to care we were spending our anniversary at their hotel. They went above my expectations, especially since we don’t typically stay at SPG properties or have status with them. Utilizing our Ultimate Reward points for this stay was a great use for them. It is very easy to accumulate Ultimate Reward points, a lot easier than it would have been to earn 10,000 SPG points.
Would I stay there again? I would absolutely stay at the Sheraton again. It was a fantastic property and they have do a great job of making you feel special there. After speaking to staff they have recently renovated the inside as well and it shows, the lobby area was extremely nice. The whole experience there makes me believe that we would consider SPG properties in the future, even though I have absolutely no interest in their reward program.
What’s your thoughts on SPG? Would you have spent your Ultimate Reward points instead of SPG points here?
