Over our vacation in March, we stayed for a total of 2 nights in New Orleans (1 night pre-cruise and 1 night post-cruise). I had just received my free night certificate from IHG and used it to book a night at the Crown Plaza in the French Quarter and the other night I redeemed 35,000 points for a night at the Holiday Inn French Quarter- Chateau Lemoyne. Today I’ll review my stay at the Crown Plaza in the French Quarter. Would we stay there again, when we decide to make a trip back to New Orleans?
Crown Plaza French Quarter:
I originally had booked 2 stays at the Holiday Inn French Quarter, but when I received my free night certificate I cancelled my reservation at the Holiday Inn and booked it at the Crown Plaza. Rebooking my stay saved me a total of 35,000 points, which I can now use for a different stay. Both are IHG hotels, but me being me, I wanted to compare the Crown Plaza to the Holiday Inn.
The night we were staying at the Crown Plaza it would have cost close to $500 for 1 night! I would never spend that much on a hotel, but it was a good way to use our free night certificate. If I were to use points, this stay would cost 45,000 points a night. I think at 45,000 points a night, this hotel is overpriced.
I did use my free night certificate which cost me $49 to keep my IHG credit card, but it was definitely worth it since I saved $450 on this room. The credit card is worth keeping for the free night alone and until they remove this perk, I will keep it.
I have mixed opinions about their customer service. I had been trying to check-in via my phone for an early check-in for 24 hours and every single time I tried, I received an error. I finally called and they said they would try to let us check in early.
When we got to the hotel, the bellman were extremely nice and let us store our bags until our rooms were ready. The gentleman was very pleasant and quite welcoming to the hotel.
When I got the to the front desk, it was not a welcoming feeling. I felt like I was an inconvenience to them the second I walked up to the desk. They did thank me for being a platinum member, but for the first time ever, I was not offered the usual 500 points for being a platinum member. Not the end of the world, but definitely struck me as odd. I asked about an early check in and if I could receive a message when our room was ready. The front desk staff seemed very put out by my request which other IHG hotels have done in the past with no issues.
**After our stay was completed, I was contacted by the manager about the survey they had sent me. I returned her call and left a message. She still hasn’t returned my call or emailed to follow up.**
I was pretty disappointed in their customer service by the front desk to say the least, especially for a room that would have cost me close to $500 or 45,000 points. I would have expected better customer service.
Our room was nothing special, it was a standard 2 queen bed room with a window looking a few buildings downtown. I forgot to take a picture of the room because we left once we dropped off out bags (oops). For the price of the rooms, I would have thought the rooms would have been nicer. It was more expensive for night at the Crown Plaza than it was at the Hyatt!
It was nice that we were placed next to our family who were staying at the Crown Plaza with us. That we were very happy about since this was a family vacation. 🙂
The hotel was right next to Bourbon St and about a 5 to 10 minute walk to Cafe Du Monde (which was extremely worth the wait!) and other parts of the French Quarter. It was about a 20 minute walk to the port for us to board our cruise ship.
If you’re looking to go down Bourbon Street and have a fun time, this hotel could work for you. For us, the location was great and was easy for us to stumble into our rooms later that night :-).
This room was a great value since it was a free night. I was even able to put 35,000 points back into by IHG account by canceling a reservation at the Holiday Inn and using my IHG free night certificate.
The front desk customer service was disappointing and the room wasn’t anything special. The location was perfect for us since it was in a pretty central location of where we wanted to be.
I would never spend $500 on a hotel for 1 night, especially when it so easy to earn free nights by normal spending or by being reward for a credit card. I definitely thought this hotel was overpriced, but that’s just me.
Would I stay there again?
Most likely not. We had far greater service at the Holiday Inn French Quarter and our family that stayed at the Hyatt next door had amazing service (The rooms there were gorgeous, made me consider making Hyatt my hotel of choice!). The Holiday Inn French Quarter was cheaper on points, and in my opinion the room was much nicer and the staff was better. Unless all my other options are full, I wouldn’t stay there again.
I’ll review the Holiday Inn in the French Quarter next. I would say if you were undecided between the Crown Plaza and the Holiday Inn French Quarter, go with the Holiday Inn.
